1930 Census Images Accessible From Home Within Hours of Official Release
Leading Online Subscription Service Forever Changes the Way We See Census Images
PROVO, Utah, April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- MyFamily.com, Inc., a leading online subscription business and the leading network for connecting families, made history as the first images of the 1930 U.S. Federal Population Census were published online less than 24 hours after the official release of the microfilm by the National Archives. The first images of the 1930 census are now available through Ancestry.com, part of the MyFamily.com, Inc. network of web sites and the leading resource for family history online.
For decades the process for accessing census records has entailed a visit to a National Archives office or a library where rolls of microfilm are located. The desired roll of microfilm is then loaded on a machine and page after page is scrolled through until the desired image is finally found.
Today MyFamily.com and the power of the Internet have changed that process. For the first time, census images became available online the same day the microfilm was released. Thus, rather than standing in a long line to sift through rolls and rolls of microfilm, images of the 1930 census can be access and viewed from the convenience of home.
"This is another powerful example of how we are making it easier to find out about your family," said Tom Stockham, President and CEO of MyFamily.com. "These records will be easier to search through, will show more detail and will be available more quickly that any census images ever released."
Images of the actual census forms for the state of Delaware were the first digitized images available through Ancestry.com. Census images for D.C., Utah and Vermont are the next in line to be published online and will be available in the coming days. Additional states will be posted each week until all images are online. Ancestry.com estimates that all 2,667 rolls of microfilm will be digitized and published online within 90 days.
In order to help family historians more easily locate individuals in this very valuable census, MyFamily.com has also begun the enormous project of creating a full name index. The index should be available online by the end of the year. Ancestry.com currently offers the most complete collection of U.S. federal census images available online, including records from each U.S. census between the years 1790 and 1920. The U.S. federal census images are available to subscribers for $69.95 as an annual subscription and $24.95 for a quarterly subscription.
